The three most important aspects of future learning, as applied to education and work settings, are autonomy, systems thinking and collaboration with an emphasis on ‘coworking’ and face-to-face communication. All three of these ideas work together to create individual freedom and exploration while promoting productive relationships between students and professionals. Autonomy promotes self-direction and provides a greater level of freedom, thereby empowering people and instilling a love of life-long learning. Systems thinking emphasizes the importance of the whole over the parts and brings together multiple points of learning from various groups whether they be other professionals, experts, or students. Collaboration through ‘coworking’ spaces and face-to-face communication helps people develop individual projects while networking and creating connections. Amidst the explosion of technology and globalization, the development of communication skills and the construction of personal relationships become even more important. In addition to networking among professionals, student mentoring will become a key aspect of education and working as professionals seek to maintain the grip of growing trends and students become acquainted with specific job skills.
The digital environment and concepts such as augmented reality over-stimulate us to the point that it begins to make the real world unsatisfying. We quickly retreat to our devices; an addiction germinates. In learning or teaching environments, how can technology be efficiently present but not the main driver of the class? Can we create spaces and environments that become as invigorating as cyberspace? There should be an effort to design learning environments, and perhaps architecture in general, to be just as stimulating, and in a more positive way. A learning environment should inspire and fuel our creativity, it should reflect the nature of the space, and should enhance the quality of its occupants’ experience. Drawing from the explosion of internet communication and social media can we create the same strength of connectivity in architecture? The ideas of transparency and simultaneity will play an important role in this investigation.
